Bike service in Vilnius: when seasonal maintenance and repairs are due

Bike service in Vilnius: when seasonal maintenance and repairs are due

The cycling season is far from over. In Lithuania you can often ride right through to autumn, so now is a good time to see how your bike has held up through the first half of the season.

A few months of regular riding put real strain on the chain, brake pads, gears, tyres, wheels and bearings. The bike may still ride, but it slowly starts behaving differently: the gears shift less precisely, the brakes need a harder pull, and there is creaking, squealing or some other noise.

It is easy to get used to these changes, but they usually mean the bike needs adjustment, servicing or repair.

A mid-season service helps to:

  • put right the faults that appeared during the first half of the season;
  • avoid an unexpected breakdown on a longer ride;
  • reduce wear on other components;
  • get precise shifting and braking back;
  • ride safely and comfortably for the rest of the season.

At the Aštunkė bike workshop in Vilnius we carry out full repairs on both standard and electric bikes: from diagnostics, adjustment and seasonal servicing to complete overhauls and the diagnosis and repair of motors, batteries and other electrical systems.

BOOK A BIKE SERVICE

The short answer: when is it time to book a service?

Do not wait until the bike stops working altogether. It is worth booking a service if:

  • the gears shift imprecisely;
  • the chain skips, crunches or drops off;
  • the brakes feel weaker;
  • you hear squealing or rubbing when braking;
  • a wheel moves sideways or runs untrue;
  • there is play at the headset, the wheels or the cranks;
  • the tyres lose pressure quickly;
  • your e-bike shows an error;
  • your e-bike has lost power or range;
  • the bike has already covered a lot of kilometres this season;
  • you are getting ready for a longer trip or a cycling tour.

Even a small change in how the bike behaves can point to a problem that is easier to fix now than after another few months of hard riding.

1. Why servicing matters during the season

Most people bring a bike in only in spring, or once it can no longer be ridden. But for a bike in heavy use, one check a year is not always enough.

During the season a bike has to cope with:

  • dust and sand;
  • rain and damp;
  • potholes and kerbs;
  • gravel and forest tracks;
  • frequent braking;
  • heavy loads on the drivetrain;
  • longer daily journeys.

These conditions take their toll fastest on the chain, the cassette, the brake pads, tyres, the spokes and the bearings.

Replaced in time chain can help protect the cassette from wearing out faster. Properly adjusted brakes not only work better, they also reduce the risk of the pads or the rotor wearing unevenly.

2. Seasonal servicing is not just a spring job

Seasonal servicing can be done at any point in the riding season.

It is particularly worthwhile when:

  • you have covered a lot of kilometres since the last service;
  • you ride every day;
  • you often ride in the rain or on gravel;
  • you are planning a longer trip;
  • you have noticed the bike behaving differently than at the start of the season;
  • you have bought a used bike;
  • you do not know when it was last checked professionally.

A seasonal service checks and adjusts the bike’s main systems, assesses how worn the parts are, and deals with problems before they turn into real failures.

3. A full service for standard and electric bikes

At the Aštunkė workshop we do both individual repairs and a complete service.

For standard bikes:

  • gear and drivetrain diagnostics and repair;
  • brake adjustment and repair;
  • chain, cassette and sprocket replacement;
  • wheel truing and spoke replacement;
  • tyres, inner tubes and tubeless systems;
  • hub, bearing and bottom bracket repair;
  • headset and crank servicing;
  • routine and full repairs.

For electric bikes we also do:

  • electrical system diagnostics;
  • motor diagnosis and repair;
  • battery condition assessment and repair;
  • controller and display diagnosis;
  • checks on cables, connectors and sensors;
  • fault finding and clearing error codes;
  • a full service of the mechanical side.

We take city, mountain, gravel, trekking, road, children’s, cargo and electric bikes.

Do not wait for a breakdown to end your ride

The season is still going, so you need the bike sorted now, not in a few months’ time.

If the brakes feel weaker, the gears are imprecise, you can hear creaking, or your e-bike has started behaving oddly, book it in for diagnostics.

at the Aštunkė bike workshop we will assess the condition of the bike, give you a quote for the work, and carry out whatever repairs your standard or electric bike needs.
